Meet the co-owner of Lokkima: Mareldia Jones

Mareldia and I met through her sister and 2 years later, I’ve made a person for life. I love our get-togethers and chats.  She introduced me to fat freezing so one thing I can definitely tell you, this business woman is more than meets the eye. She’s kind as she is driven – and the proof is in the pudding, after all, she just opened her newest Lokkima branch is the snazzy Foundry in the Cape Town CBD.

Meet the owner of Lokkima…

Who is Mareldia Jones? Tell us your story?

I grew up in Cape Town for most of my life. After school, I studied accounting and currently I have a year to go before I qualify. I have over 16 years’ experience in the insurance industry. I have one younger sister, Nooraan and she introduced me to you.

How did you get into the fat freezing business?

Allan, my business partner and I met during 2016 and he had told me what his company was doing. At the time, I honestly thought that this man had serious issues as I had never heard about it before. Coincidently, they showed the episode where Kim Kardashian had gone for a treatment that same weekend and I eventually googled it. Months passed and he said he had a machine and I jokingly said I would buy it. He thought I was serious and he asked if I was still interested. I just laughed at him and told him he was crazy. At the time, I was working about 21 hours a day, seven days a week at my last employer but I also realised that I loved my clients and the work that I was doing but my values and the company’s values were no longer aligned. During this time I also decided to do a short course in NLP and things kind of just became clear. A few weeks later, he called and said “I will make you a proposal to join the company but I know you will never do it” (anyone who really knows me knows I hate being dared). After day three, I found myself typing out my resignation and the rest is history.

It’s been just over two years and I have had the most amazing time ever. I have met so many people and no day is the same. Each and every one of my clients have their own story and love the fact that I get to play a small part in it. I just LOVE, LOVE WHAT I do.

Why fat freezing?

It was something new and exciting and very few people know what it is. I have always struggled with my weight myself and found something that worked for me. So at the moment awareness is one of our top goals. We are also slowly venturing into other non-invasive treatments but fat freeze will always be the core treatment of our business.

What has been the most valuable life lessons you’ve learned?

Try never to judge anyone. Only God can do that. Treat everyone with respect and if you want to judge someone don’t base it on their religion, race or sexual orientation. Everyone seeks acceptance and love. Everyone has their own journeys, respect that. Your word is your honour. Things are never coincidental and even though I don’t have patience myself, things happen when it should, not when you want it to. Some people love you and some don’t, be ok with that. Some people are seasonal.

What life lessons have you used in your business?

Do everything from the heart. Respect people’s privacy. Some days are amazing and sometimes they are not. Take the lesson out of the ones that are not and always try to do better.

What inspires you?

Something as a simple walk along the beach can inspire me but people in general inspire me the most. There is not one person that has not made a change in my life. Our company allows us to meet many people and they often think we just help them. I often get my greatest ideas after talking to them.

How do you balance your personal and work life?

At the moment work has taken over my life especially with how fast we have grown. I still try to keep in contact with people that’s close to me. When we do have time off, I try to travel or spend time with my family and friends or catch up on some series. I have a really great support group which makes it easy.

Describe a typical day for you?

Wake up as late as a possibly can (I suffer from insomnia), look at emails or messages. Then off to one of the branches to start doing treatments. After the last client leaves my business partner and I would normally meet up for a walk or a gym session and discuss any urgent things for the following day. Grab supper and then go home. Do some admin and then fall asleep to some or other series.

If you could go back in time and tell younger Mareldia anything, what would it be?

You’ll be ok. Stress less about what people think of you. Be selfish sometimes and take more time out. Travel!!! Allow people to do things for you and be less stubborn.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Time travel. We lost our folks when we were young and would definitely like to spend more time with both of them.

What are your plans for 2019?

Besides just opening our 30th branch of Lokkima, we were asked to assist another branch in USA for three months. So definitely traveling, opening another branch or two of our own and hopefully finish my studies.

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner, who would it be and why?

Mom – Lost her at 19 and would like to see her again

Dad – also lost him young and was a mean cook

Mrs Gerwel – A teacher who had a great influence in my life up to the day she passed. Ironically we shared a birthday.

My late aunt- she took care of us when we lost our folks.

My aunt – she is my third mom and always makes you feel loved and always laughs at the things she says
